Recipe: Sicilian Mozzarella Appetizer
This easy appetizer is gorgeous and easy to prepare, but the “surprise” factor comes from the spice that is sprinkled on the plate, under the mozzarella. When you pop a morsel into your mouth, the combination of cinnamon, orange and fennel spice hits your tongue first; then the coolness of the mozzarella soothes it, followed by the refreshing c-r-u-n-c-h of the red bell pepper.
Here’s how to prepare this:
1 8 oz ball mozzarella
1 large red pepper
bunch of fresh basil
2 tsps Sunny Sicilian blend by Your Spice of Life
Select a pretty, flat serving dish. Sprinkle the Sunny Sicilian evenly across the bottom of the dish.
Wash and seed the red pepper. Cut it into squares about 3/4″ in size. You will need 16-20 squares of pepper. Set aside.
Cut the mozzarella ball into 1/2″ cubes. You will need about 16-20 cubes. Set aside. Keep any remainder for another recipe or a snack for the cook!
Wash and dry the basil.
To assemble, place a piece of mozzarella on the toothpick, followed by a small leaf of basil, topped by the square of red pepper. Make sure the mozzarella is at the very bottom of the toothpick, because you will want it to lay flat on the spice that is on the serving flate. Continue to assemble and place on the serving pate until you’ve used all of the cheese and peppers.
Garnish the plate with a sprig or 2 of basil.
This dish can be made up to an hour ahead of time, and should be refrigerated if not served immediately.
My husband had made a very nice sign on the computer Friday when I was working to put with the appetizer so every one would know what it is, plus what was in the spice (in case anyone is allergic to any of the ingredients).
I tasted one while I was making them, and I wasn’t sure I liked it that much; however, I put the dish into my refrigerator overnight until we had to bring it to our wine club. I thought it was much better cold.
I got sooooooooooo many compliments on it. Everyone was asking me about it. I explained the whole thing and how I found you on line. Quite often when we all bring appetizers, we come home with some that were still left on the plate. I CAME HOME WITH NONE! They all went. “
