Guest Chef… for a cause!
“Would you like to be a guest chef?” is a phrase I’ve been dying to hear! It finally happened a few weeks ago, when Janis Smythe, the chair of Hillsdale’s “Green Solutions” Committee, contacted me.
Part of Green Solutions’ mission is to “serve as a model of energy efficiency that both builders and home owners can adopt to enjoy long term cost savings and cleaner air”, and they are very creative in how they put this mission into action.
One way is to bring in guest chefs to the Hillsdale Farmers Market, and have the chef demonstrate how to use the bounty of seasonal produce.
Smythe also uses this occasion to encourage Market guests to grow their own produce, reaping the energy benefit of fruits and veggies that make the short trip from backyard to kitchen.
Being mid-July, there were plenty of vegetables for me to choose from for my demo. I decided on broccoli and cucumbers; they are inexpensive, easy to work with, have wide appeal, and I had two killer recipes that I wanted to use: Curried Broccoli Raisin salad and Cool Cucumber Dill salad.
It was a hit! We had a steady flow of locals and tourists coming by, stopping to watch me prepare a dish, pick up a recipe, chat with Janis about Green Solutions, and sample one (or both!) of the salads. We ran out of printed recipes towards the end, but we made sure people knew that they could come here to get them.
Thank you to the Town of Hillsdale, our Market Manager Willa Horton, and especially Janis Smythe and the Green Solutions Committee for their good work!
The Hillsdale Farmers Market takes place at the Hamlet Park on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays of the month, from 9AM to 12 noon. Your Spice of Life is one of the regular vendors.
