Event: Signature Chef Auction for the March of Dimes
Every October for the last 4 years, I’ve been part of something delicious, fun and worthy: the March of Dimes’ “Signature Chef Auction“.
This event is a huge fundraiser for this organization whose mission is “to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality”. Money is raised by ticket sales, sponsorships, a huge silent auction, a live auction featuring lavish meal and vacation packages, and an old-fashioned raffle.
The draw, undoubtedly, is the food. Area restaurants and chefs come together, setting up booths all around the space. The foods and beverages are served in sample sizes, allowing guests to try out several different purveyors. I tried braised pork belly, mac ‘n cheese, a 4″ shrimp and a salmon slider all in one night… where else could you do that?
The highlight of the evening, for me, is the Iron Chef style cook-off! Five chefs, each with one assistant, are stationed at tables with simple camp stoves. The chefs bring dozens of small containers, filled with prepped veggies, dairy products, and seasonings. But they don’t know what they’ll be asked to prepare, until all of the mystery ingredients are announced.
Those ingredients have varied a lot in the past; I’ve supplied cinnamon, coriander, and sumac. This year, I wanted to challenge them in a different way, so my mystery spice was…. wait, you don’t think I’m going to tell you, do you?
